Awakening 7

Janoor and Gregov stumble as the Ice Palace begins to shake. A wry smile comes across the face of the king.

“What are you smiling at?” Gregov shouts as he parries the king’s slashing strike.

“You have summoned your dragons,” Janoor says as he knocks the battle axe out of Gregov’s hand.

“What is it you want?” Gregov says as he has a sword pointed at his neck.

“Not much.” the king wryly says to Gregov. “Just your undying loyalty to me and my kingdom.”

“For what reason?” Rionel blurts out. “You’ve been a cruel vindictive king. You even locked up your own daughter.”

“Really?” a voice from the shadows says. “I thought you knew me better than that, Ri.”

The Death of Serulla

(As told by Destiny Phoenix…)

Serulla is a Komodo, a reptilian-like humanoid raised in a samurai clan society. She is the one caretaker of me that had the biggest impression on me. She took care of me for my parents since my birth.

My mom, Ariel Phoenix, walks down the stairwell in the basement over to the shelter built underneath our home. There Lady Serulla sits in a rocker nursing me. She hears my mother come and looks over at the stairs with her gold eyes. They are sad. Two other children are here as well. A toddler, about 2 years old, and another newborn.

At the time, I never knew these children would grow up to be Sandra and Chris Carpenter, my best friend and boyfriends respectively.

“How are the children?” She asks as she wipes blood off her forehead.

“The two Carpenters are sleeping soundly, while little Destiny just awoke to feed,” Serulla says softly to my mother.

“That’s good. These three will grow up to be extra special when the time comes.”

“What of young Master Brandon?” She asks mom.

“We sent him off to boarding school for his protection. I didn’t want to do it.” Ariel tells Serulla somberly.

“What happened?!?” She asks. “You’re covered in blood ma’am.”

“Grims. Multiple grins attacked us this evening as we patrolled the edge of the forest looking for the local witch coven.”

“Lillian and Walt were hurt and Gregory is with them at the emergency room,” My mother says. “I was asked to come and check on the children.”

“As you can see everything’s all right.”

“Thank heaven,” Ariel says.

Then, a perimeter alarm on the house goes off. My mother goes nuts. She removes the ivory handled katana from the scabbard across her back.

“Protect the kids,” Ariel says to Serulla. “I will be back shortly.”

Quickly, my mother rushes up the stairs to the basement. Then, she circles over to the basement stairwell to head up into the kitchen. That’s when she sees the intruders.

Wraiths. Damn! She thought to herself as she crouches behind the kitchen bar. Then, the tang of her katana scrapes the ground. No. Ariel, you idiot.

The wraiths mumble something in a language that Ariel doesn’t understand as she tries to make her way over to the formal dining room. Quickly, one enters from the other side of the formal dining room as Ariel enters it.

My mother knows she’s trapped. The wraith throws a dart at Ariel which she dodges as she slides into the wall opposite the kitchen entrance. The room is much longer than it is wide.

“Where are the children, Phoenix?” The wraith says wispily to my mother.

“I will never tell you!”

“Then, you’ll die!”

Both the wraith and Ariel hear fighting coming from the living room. Several high pitched squeals can be heard as the remaining wraiths are killed.

Ariel and the last wraith run into the living room. Ariel through the kitchen and the wraith through the main hallway.

Ariel gets to the living room in time to see the wraith gut an exhausted Serulla.

“No!” My mother exclaims as she dives through the bar pass through into the living room.

The wraith swipes at my mother with his razor sharp claws. She blocks them with her katana. Ariel, then, spins to avoid another swipe. In the process, she swings her katana and decapitates the remaining wraith.

The body of the wraith falls to the ground as my mother rushes over to Serulla.

“Take care, Lady Ariel.” She says with her last breath. “The kids are…safe.”

My mother cries as Serulla dies in her arms. How did this happen? In my home? How?!?

Little Known Tramp

Heather Rivers, a curly blonde waitress, gets off from working at Lester’s Diner. She takes her 2007 Rusting white Honda Accord and heads over to a local bar called The Loose Goose. She parks parallel to the street and walks inside. The bartender, a strapping young man named Brian, sees Heather and nods her direction. The blonde walks over to the bar, she is wearing a skintight leather dress. She sways her hips as she continues towards the bar where she sees Brian.Brian rubs a hand through his black mop of hair as she sits down. “What’ll be?”

“I’ll have a vodka martini with a cherry on top,” Heather says as she plays with her golden locks while looking around the room.

She notices a bronze headed gentleman, two stools down, drowning his sorrows in a glass of scotch. He looks vaguely familiar to her. She nods his direction.

“So, honey, what’s got you so down?” She asks him.

The bronze headed gentleman, William Stromhold, looks up at her. “There is someone I’m interested in but she’s with someone else.”

Heather scoots over towards him. She puts her arm around his neck. William breathes in the sweet scent of Heather’s perfume and her blood.

“Forget about her,” Heather says. “I’m much better for you. Besides you don’t want to be lonely, do you?”

“No, I don’t,” Will replies as Heather’s drink arrives. Will, then, swigs back the rest of his drink and asks for another.

“You are so gorgeous, honey,” she sultrily says to Will. “What’s your name?”

“William Stromhold, but call me Will.”

“And you can call me Heather,” she say swirling the cherry in her drink. Then, she takes the cherry out and bites it off. With her tongue she is able to twist the stem. Then, she removes the stem from her mouth.

“Impressive.” Will says as he gets his refill. Both take a sip of their drinks and move over to a more secluded part of the bar.

As they walk over their table, a gust of wind brushes against her neck. This raises the hairs on the back of Will’s neck as the thirst begins to swell in him.

His fangs begin to extend. Heather looks at th and rushes him over to their secluded table. She looks him in the eyes with concern for him.

“Not here, Will,” she tells him. “You trying to get yourself staked. Reign those back in, honey. I got plans for you.”

This shocks Will for a moment. A human not afraid of a vampire, but already knew he was one?!? Huh?!?

“How did you?!?”

“Don’t worry about that, honey,” Heather says. “I’m not the dumb blonde bimbo everyone seems to think I am. I seem to surprise a lot of people with my knowledge.”

“I bet,” William says to her. “What are you wanting to do?”

That’s when Heather pulls William towards her. She kisses him. After slight momentary shock, Will reciprocates.

Heather runs her hands over Will’s chiseled body. She feels the heat building in her body as Will gently kisses her neck.

“Honey, take me home and rock me,” she tells him.

“Yours or mine,” he asks.

“Surprise me.”

Then, both William and Heather leave the Loose Goose. William and Heather get into his jade green Mercedes Benz S63 AMG and take off.
